I think most of us have probably heard Aretha Franklin singing about how all she wants is a little respect. I believe that one of the reasons, besides the fact that it is Aretha singing it, that song is so popular is because we can relate. After all, don't we all just want a little respect.
Respect is treating others the way we would like to be treated. Having said that it makes me think "Do I respect myself?" Heavy I know, but if we don't respect ourselves and our values it's most likely others won't either. Also, how can we give to others what we don't have.
Only when we learn to respect and accept ourselves for who we are will we be able to extend that courtesy to others, and feel deserving of receiving it.
Simply Put:
Do unto others what you would have them do unto you (Luke 6:31).
